LORAIN — Palm Elementary School’s playground was declared a total loss after a fire Wednesday evening.
At about 5:19 p.m., Lorain Fire Department received a call for the fire, finding the playground fully engulfed, according to Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Fenn.
“Those playgrounds once they get going there’s a lot of smoke, a lot of fire,” Fenn said.
It took less than 10 minutes for crews to get the fire under control. Fenn said this is the fifth or sixth playground fire his department has responded to in the past decade. He said it is normally just kids messing around, though the fire, including its cause, is still under investigation.
Surveillance footage was reviewed and turned over to Lorain police with suspects identified, according to a statement from Lorain Schools.
The fire was contained to the first-through-fifth grade equipment, which will be removed and replaced in the spring.
“It’s a playground, it’s where kids play and now it’s gone for probably the rest of the year and it’s a shame,” Fenn said. “One person messes it up for everybody.”
