ELYRIA — An Elyria man has been indicted on kidnapping and gross sexual imposition charges in connection with an attack of a woman jogging Aug. 31.
Joseph Wellman, 26, of East River Road, was charged with two counts of first-degree felony kidnapping and a fourth-degree felony count of gross sexual imposition by a Lorain County grand jury secret indictment unsealed Monday.
Lorain County Prosecutor Dennis Will said the alleged incident took place in Elyria during the evening of Aug. 31.
“The victim was jogging in the evening,” Will said. While she was on her way home, she was accosted by a male subject was trying to get her to engage with him. She told him, “Look, just leave me alone.”
A second man jumped out and grabbed her, began fondling her and touching her “in a sexual manner,” Will said. The woman tried to get away from her attackers, but the men wouldn’t let her go. Eventually, she fought them off and ran away.
“She gave a description of the individual and the area where this occurred, and one of the officers thought, from the description, he knew who the person might have been,” Will said. “She was shown a lineup, and he was identified.”
Will said police are still investigating and more charges could come in the future.
