Elyria police and firefighters arrived to a rollover crash on Lake Avenue and Gateway Boulevard following a police chase Sunday night.

ELYRIA — A teenager faces a host of charges after a police chase led to a rollover crash Sunday night.

Elyria fire Lt. Brett Bevan said firefighters responded to the scene about 8 p.m., and the three occupants of a Kia Optima were in custody with injuries that weren’t life-threatening. Two men, both passengers in the car, were released after their statements were taken, but the car’s driver, a 17-year-old was charged with two counts of receiving stolen property and one count each of failure to comply and reckless operation.

Sunday evening, a police officer spotted a 2015 Kia traveling southbound on Lorain Boulevard. The Kia had a license plate that had been reported stolen from a 2012 Kia Optima while it was parked at the Cleveland Clinic in Chestnut Commons on Sept. 18. Further investigation revealed that the car driving down Lorain Boulevard had also been reported stolen overnight that same day from a home on Blake Street.

After turning onto Foster Avenue from Lorain, the officer turned on lights and sirens to get the Kia pull over. It moved into the right lane, but then took off, continuing west on Foster to Woodland, and from there on to Lowell Street.

Eddie Sabbah said he saw the car from his bar, Eddie’s Club on Lowell Street, and said it appeared to be going 100 mph while police cruisers chased it.

“I saw that Kia coming over the bridge with a high speed,” he said. “Then, like two or three seconds later, the cops started coming after him, flying.”

From Lowell, the Kia turned onto Lake Avenue, and as it approached North Gateway Boulevard, struck the curb and went airborne, striking a tree and rolling over, finally coming to rest on its roof.

The teen, who apologized to police for fleeing, said he’d bought the car recently from an unknown seller for $200.
