ELYRIA — A man was shot and killed at an apartment complex on West River Road North on Monday evening.

About 6 p.m. Elyria police responded to a report of shots fired with a person shot at the Southwyck Apartments complex. When police arrived they found Zachary Mason, 20, collapsed between two vehicles in front of one of the buildings with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.

“All we’ve been able to determine as of now is that a male subject was in a second-floor apartment, and obviously something happened where he was shot,” Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino said. “It appears what happened, happened outside in the common hallway on the second floor landing.”

In a news release, police said Mason made it out to the parking lot before collapsing. Officers performed CPR on scene before he was taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center where he died.

Several Elyria police officers and Lorain County Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene and had the area between the two buildings taped off. Many residents from the apartments were milling around asking what had happened.

Some residents returned home from work or the store only to be told they couldn’t enter their apartments while police investigated the scene.

Two men were overheard saying their “little brother was shot,” but neither man wanted to comment on the shooting.

Police were talking with witnesses, placing evidence markers and taking photographs of the scene. A tan Ford Fusion with temporary tags was towed from the scene, but it’s unknown if it’s related to the shooting.

At one point several police officers entered the building where the shooting occurred with guns drawn. Costantino said officers were clearing the building.

“There was a laundry room that was closed,” he said. “The door was locked, and we wanted to go in and make sure no one was in there.”

Police have made no arrests and were continuing to investigate, Costantino said. Anyone with information is asked to call Elyria police at (440) 323-3302.
