Inmate jumps out of transport van, caught 4 hours later (UPDATED)

    Charles F. Thompson, 39, of Elyria, fled from the custody of the Community Based Correction Facility, but was recaptured four hours later.



ELYRIA — A man who jumped from a corrections facility transport van eluded police for roughly four hour after a court appearance in Elyria on Monday morning.

According to a news release from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, Charles F. Thompson, 39, of Elyria, jumped from a van that was returning him to the Lorain/Medina Community Based Correctional Facility about 11:51 a.m.

Elyria Police captured him about 4 p.m. that afternoon in front of Middle Avenue Laundry Center, 818 Middle Ave.

According to the release, Thompson was being taken to an appearance before Judge John Miraldi in Lorain County Common Pleas Court on charges of receiving stolen property, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. On the way back, authorities said Thompson, who was not restrained, jumped out of the van at the intersection of West River Road and Second Street, then ran east on Second Street.
