ELYRIA — An Oberlin man has been indicted on aggravated vehicular homicide charges in connection with a January 2017 fatal crash in Amherst.

Delucas Lucas, 39, was indicted on a third-degree felony count of aggravated vehicular homicide and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, according to a secret indictment unsealed Monday.

Police have said Lucas was driving a 2003 Monte Carlo SS about 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 11, 2017, on state Route 2 when the vehicle rolled over and crashed. Lucas’ girlfriend — Fanecia Jackson, 36, of Lorain — was in the car with him at the time of the crash.

Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene, and Lucas was taken to Mercy Hospital and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Witnesses told Amherst police the vehicle was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when it rolled over.

At the time of the crash, police did not indicate whether drugs or alcohol had been a factor, but the family of Jackson said they doubted Lucas was intoxicated because he didn’t drink.
