ELYRIA — One man was injured in a single-car rollover at Lake Avenue and Spruce Street on Saturday evening.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., a man reportedly sped down Lake Avenue, after a hit-skip at the river walk near the police station, where he had backed into a car.

According to Elyria police Sgt. Brandon Poole, the man attempted to turn onto Spruce Street and hit a utility pole. Live wires were down at the scene, prompting a response from Ohio Edison. It was unknown when residents on Spruce Street would get power back, as the damage to the pole was extensive.

The man was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. Poole said the man may be flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

“We believe he’s the only injury,” Poole said. “The person he hit at the river falls wasn’t injured at all.”

Poole said drugs or alcohol use is suspected, though the crash is under investigation, and charges are pending.
