Elyria man killed in early-morning Penfield Township crash

An Elyria man is dead following an early morning crash in Penfield Township.

According to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Jeffrey Shaw, 22, was driving a 2004 Jeep Cherokee north on Foster Road around 2:42 a.m. The release states that he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with Route 18 and struck the side of a tanker trailer being driven by Randy Hunter, 58, of Wellington.

The Jeep became lodged under the trailer, and Shaw was pronounced dead at the scene. Hunter was uninjured. The crash forced the closure of Route 18 in both directions for about two hours. The road has since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
