AVON — A shoplifting complaint turned into a high-speed chase Saturday afternoon, ending in a search for the driver by Avon, Sheffield and North Ridgeville police.
Travone Lee Edwards, 24, of Lorain, is charged with failing to comply with the order and signal of a police officer, theft, possessing criminal tools, red light, marked lanes and driving on a closed road, following a high-speed chase from the Walmart in Avon to Sheffield.
According to a news release from Avon police, while responding to a motor vehicle crash at the Walmart on Chester Road, an officer was told by a citizen that a man had just stolen a television from the store. When the officer made contact with the man, later identified as Edwards, he fled at a high rate of speed and was pursued by police from Chester Road onto Jaycox Road — where he traveled over the closed road until he reached Detroit Road. Edwards then turned onto Detroit Road, ignoring officers’ orders to stop the vehicle, and drove into Sheffield, where the pursuit was terminated by officers when they lost sight of the vehicle. The car was later found unoccupied on Detroit Road by Sheffield police, prompting attempts by Avon, Sheffield and North Ridgeville Police Department’s K-9 unit to locate Edwards. He reportedly was found later that day and taken into custody.
