ELYRIA – A grandmother and her daughter are facing charges after their child was found sleeping in the middle of a playground Monday morning.
Staff from Horizon Activities Center on Louden Court learned of a “lump” in the playground at about 7 a.m.., which was a sleeping 2-year-old girl, according to a police report. The child was reportedly dirty, cold, scared, shaking, hungry and non-verbal with a soiled diaper wearing socks but no shoes.
Officers called to the scene tracked down the child’s home on the 100 block of Louden Court. Officers found the child’s grandmother, Sharon Lambert and another 2-year-old girl.
Sharon told police her daughter, Shandra Lambert, 34 and her boyfriend went out the night before and left the grandmother to babysit the two girls. Sharon said she saw the girls asleep on the couch before falling asleep around 2 a.m. and awoke from the officers knocking on her door.
Officers then spoke to Shandra, who they noticed was still too intoxicated to speak correctly or stand straight. Shandra told officers she was out with friends drinking and returned home about the time the officers were knocking on her door.
Within an hour or two, Child Protective Services workers interviewed the family and inspected the home. Officers reportedly found trash cans overflowing, rotting food on plates covering counters, soiled and ripped furniture, cluttered floors, no air circulation and a strong odor.
Shandra reportedly became angry at the CPS workers and tried to stop the investigation, pushing them, but the officers allowed the investigation to continue. The representatives reported the children were in danger and were removed. While waiting for the children to be picked up, Shandra shouted at the CPS officials. Officers charged Shandra with disorderly conduct persisting and Sharon with endangering children.
