ELYRIA – A Lorain man led police on a car and foot chase by Midway Mall before running into a creek bed where he was taken into custody this morning.
Antovion Washington, 18, of Riverside Drive, Lorain, is charged with failure to comply, obstruction of official business, no valid license, and reckless operation.
Officers were patrolling the parking lot on David Drive around 1 a.m. when they heard a Jeep with an extremely loud muffler in the area. Police watched the Jeep, which they say was driven by Washington, blow the stop sign on Market Drive and head into Midway Mall, where he cut diagonally through the parking lot, driving over the raised curb landscaped areas.
Police said they attempted to pull Washington over but he kept going. At one point, the Jeep came to a sudden stop and Washington ran from the car through the parking lot of the Sherwin Williams and into a creek bed.
Officers were able to form a perimeter around the area and took Washington into custody as he came out of the woods.
Even though police said Washington was the only person in the car, Washington told officers that he wasn’t the one driving and the fictional driver tried to escape police because of having weapons on him. Officers said they used a police dog to determine that no other person was in the Jeep or left the Jeep.
