ELYRIA – An Elyria woman was killed and another was flown by LifeFlight to MetroHealth Medical Center following a car wreck Monday morning.
Vicki L. Hill, 58, of Elyria, was killed after her 2007 Jeep Liberty was by another vehicle at the traffic signal at the intersection of West Avenue and Third Street. The other vehicle, a 2003 Buick Century, was driven by Kristi Fitch, 40, also of Elyria.
At 5:46 a.m., police received a report of a crash at the intersection. Hill was stopped at the traffic signal at the intersection, heading northbound, when Fitch’s vehicle struck the rear of the Jeep, according to police.
When officers arrived, the Jeep Liberty was engulfed in flames. Officers attempted to get into the vehicle but were pushed back by the intensity of the flames, according to police.
Fitch was yelling for help in the Buick, and officers were able to remove her from the vehicle just before it caught fire.
Fire personnel arrived on the scene and tried to extinguish the fire and remove Hill from the vehicle, but were unsuccessful, according to police. Hill died at the scene.
Fitch was issued a citation for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She remains in MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and more charges are likely.
