ELYRIA – An Elyria Municipal Court judge ordered no bond for murder suspect Roy Owens Jr. during his initial appearance in court Friday morning.
Owens appeared on a TV screen in front of Judge Lisa Locke Graves from the Lorain County Jail wearing a suicide prevention garment.
Elyria Police Detective James Homoki said Owens attempted suicide while waiting for transport from the Darke County Jail. Homoki said Owens cut a piece of cloth from the bottom of his pants and wrapped it around his neck. Owens was first taken to a medical center in Darke County before being released into the custody of the Elyria Police.
Owens is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Linnea Satterfield, 56. Police had found blood and signs of a struggle Tuesday at his Charles Court Home after Satterfield’s sister Michele Plumley called police to report her missing.
On Wednesday, Darke County sheriff deputies received a call about an impaired driver and when they arrived, found the 2001 Buick LeSabre that Owens was believed to be driving in a ditch.
Police have said Owens was outside of the vehicle in his underwear and socks and held a knife to his wrists and throat, although the knife was dull and caused no significant injuries.
Satterfield’s body was found naked and decomposing in the rear of the car, Homoki said during the arraignment.
Locke Graves said no plea will be taken on the case. If the judge finds probable cause during a preliminary hearing the case will be transferred to the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas where it will be presented to a grand jury.
The date for a preliminary hearing has not been set.
Homoki said Satterfield was “beaten, severely, stabbed multiple times.
“She then was deceased and put in the rear of his vehicle and transported across multiple county lines,” Homoki said.
During the two days that Owens was gone, Homoki said he camped out in corn fields before being found by Darke County Sheriff’s deputies after a car accident.
Owens is charged with aggravated murder, felonious assault and domestic violence.
