UPDATED: Police kill driver on Interstate 71 after chase; woman, three kids in vehicle unhurt

A Strongsville police officer fatally shot the driver on Interstate 71 near the Route 3 exit after a high-speed chase of a vehicle with a woman and three children inside.

According to a news release from Strongsville police, officers tried to stop a vehicle on Interstate 71 for a traffic violation around 2:26 a.m. The vehicle, driven by a suspect unidentified by police, sped off. Officers pursued the vehicle into Medina County to the State Route 3 exit.

“A Strongsville officer discharged his weapon and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene,” police said in the statement. The woman and children weren’t injured. It’s unclear if the man was in the vehicle or outside of it when he was killed.

Two Strongsville cruisers were damaged, but no officers were injured. Police referred media to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which was called to the scene. A message was left for Agent Charles Moran.

Interstate 71 was reopened northbound before 6 a.m., and southbound around 8 a.m.
