Victim in Avon Lake drowning identified as Lorain man

AVON LAKE – A 24-year-old Lorain man who drowned Saturday was believed to be going after a flying disc when he disappeared under water.

Police identified the man as Omar Rosa-Marquez.

“From what I understand they were within the designated swimming areas, but he might have gone beyond that to retrieve a Frisbee and it appears, from what the witnesses were saying, that’s when he got into trouble,” said Lt. Scott Fishburn.

The Avon Lake Fire Department, Rescue Squad and Coast Guard responded at 5:02 p.m. Saturday to Miller Road Park beach and fishing pier but were unable to immediately locate him. When he resurfaced near the shoreline at 5:18 p.m. CPR was initiated.

He was pronounced dead at St. John Medical Center in Westlake.
