Vermilion Road reopens after train, truck crash

VERMILION – A well-trafficked road that was closed for almost five days following a truck and train crash on Friday finally reopened Tuesday morning.

Around 11 a.m. Friday, a crash occurred between a truck carrying batteries and a train on Vermilion Road, spilling battery acid around the area of the crash and sending one man to the hospital.

Spilltek Environmental Services helped clean up the scene while workers from Norfolk Southern Railroad helped repair mechanical issues at the train crossing, according to Dave Pidgeon of Norfolk Southern Railroad.

“We would prefer to have the roadway reopened as fast as we possibly can,” Pidgeon said, explaining that other issues – including another crash west of Vermilion – came up over the weekend, which pulled resources away from Vermilion. Since railroad workers had to focus on other incidents over the weekend, the time it took to repair the tracks at Vermilion Road was extended, Pidgeon said.

Vermilion Mayor Eileen Bulan said she’s just glad the tracks are reopened.

“Vermilion Road is very highly traveled,” she said.
