Police find crack, heroin on burglary suspect


AMHERST – A man who police say ran from a house after a burglary was found with a bag of crack and a bag of heroin.

Robert Simmons, 34, was charged with burglary, possessing criminal tools, possession of heroin, possession of crack, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday in Amherst.

Police arrived at the 500 block of Jackson Street around 3:30 p.m. Thursday for a call about a burglary in progress and were told that the suspect – later identified as Simmons – ran from the house and got into a green Dodge pickup up the street.

An officer saw the vehicle, driven by Simmons, traveling southbound on Jackson Street before turning onto Elyria Road and then eastbound on Middle Ridge Road.

Simmons tossed a bag of white powder out of the car as he drove, according to police.

Officers stopped the car on Middle Ridge Road and took Simmons into custody while they searched his car. Inside, they found a bag of heroin and a bag of crack.

Simmons was taken to Lorain County Jail. where he was being held on Friday on a $50,000 bond.
