Coast Guard rescues kayakers off coast in Lorain

LORAIN — Two kayakers, a mother and son, who became stranded on a breakwall Friday were helped ashore by U.S. Coast Guard officials.

According to a news release, the Coast Guard station in Lorain received a call about 12:15 p.m. from a mother who said her son was stranded after trying several times to right his capsized kayak in waters off Lorain.

A Coast Guard boat already in the area found the boy in good condition. After draining water out of the kayak, the crew transferred the kayak to the other side of the breakwall in the Lorain Harbor. The boy climbed into the kayak and paddled safely away with his mother.

The Coast Guard reported that the kayak was on the Lake Erie side of the breakwall when it capsized, which meant the boy was fighting the current while trying to get back in the kayak.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Eric Eberl, who was the officer-of-the-day in Lorain, said in the news release that people should call the Coast Guard before a problem becomes too serious.

“The mother in this case made the right decision in calling for help immediately, even though her son was not in a critical situation,” Eberl said.

The Coast Guard did not release the names of those they assisted Friday.
