Alleged drug dealer charged with assaulting, robbing teen

ELYRIA — A drug dealer allegedly beat up a teenager, robbed him and fractured his jaw over drug money Monday before hiding from officers in his girlfriend’s basement, police said.

Forrest Phillips, 21, who goes by the street name “Bubba,” was charged with felonious assault and robbery about 1 p.m. Wednesday at his girlfriend’s house in the 100 block of Bath Street.

The arrest came after an assault Monday when a 17-year-old boy told police he was riding his bike on Bath Street and saw Phillips and two other men. The teenager remembered Phillips because he’d bought marijuana from him in the past, said Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino.

Phillips approached the 17-year-old and told him he owed Phillips drug money, Costantino said. The teenager said he’d already paid and Phillips, in turn, accused the teenager of stealing money from his house. The 17-year-old tried to leave the area but Phillips punched him in the head and, along with the other two men, started kicking and punching the teenager in the face, back and legs, Costantino said.

To get them to stop, the teenager threw $20 on the ground and ran from the area. He went to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and was treated for a fractured jaw, Costantino said.

Inside Phillips’ girlfriend’s house, police officers found bullets, a loaded gun stuffed in a couch and Phillips hiding in the basement, Costantino said.

Phillips was charged with the assault and robbery and taken to Lorain County Jail where he was held on a $40,000 bond Thursday.

Costantino said Phillips could incur additional charges, and police were looking for the two other suspects involved in the assault.

Phillips’ court date is 1 p.m. Thursday at Elyria Municipal Court.
