Cleveland man arrested after high-speed chase

A man accused of leading police on a chase that exceeded 100 mph about 4:55 p.m. Sunday is due in Elyria Municipal Court today.

Ruben Lopez, 24, of Cleveland, was arrested and charged with fleeing police and reckless driving.

Sgt. Tim Hoffman, Ohio Highway Patrol Elyria post assistant commander, said he saw a silver Acura RSX speeding west on state Route 10 in North Ridgeville. The driver passed other cars on the shoulder and exited onto state Route 57 north.

Hoffman said he chased the Acura east on Chestnut Ridge Road to state Route 83 south to state Route 82 where he lost sight of the car. Hoffman said a couple of minutes later, a neighbor alerted Trooper Josh Grimm that an Acura fitting the description of the one in the chase had parked behind a house near the intersection of state routes 82 and 83 in Eaton Township, across from Amish Swings and Things, 35980 Royalton Road.

Hoffman said there were fresh tire tracks in the yard and Grimm arrested Acura owner Ruben Lopez outside the car. Hoffman said Lopez said he didn’t stop because he’d been previously told by police that he’d be jailed if he was caught driving 100 mph or more.

Hoffman said Lopez admitted to going at least 90 mph during the approximately 5-mile chase, which lasted about five minutes. Lopez was being held at the Lorain County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond Sunday night.
