Student collapses on playground, hospitalized

ELYRIA — A student at Elyria Christian Academy collapsed on the playground at the school Monday morning and was rushed to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center before being sent to Cleveland Clinic children’s hospital.

The call came in shortly after 11 a.m. — a young child in full arrest and unresponsive.

LifeCare and the Carlisle Township Fire Department rushed to the small private school. Paramedics worked on the young child for several minutes at the school.

Carlisle Fire Chief Kevin Dembiec said it appears as if the student was playing outside before collapsing. Firefighters did not get a name or age.

“Really, we were just worried about getting him loaded and out of there,” he said.

Lorain County Sheriff’s Lt. Don Barker said deputies were not called to the school, just down the road from the sheriff’s office. He had no information on the child’s condition.

The school’s principal, Elizabeth Crider, did not want to comment. She said she wanted to reach out to the family first.
