ATV driver charged in crash

LAGRANGE TWP. — The combination of “a couple of beers” and a nighttime ATV ride led a man crashing his vehicle and injuring his son on Sunday, deputies said.

Joseph Gaughan, 42, of Carlisle Township, was charged with misconduct at an emergency, endangering children, resisting arrest, operating a vehicle intoxicated and three counts of assault on a police officer.

About 8:45 p.m. Sunday, Lorain County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the 18400 block of Indian Hollow Road to find a distraught, intoxicated Gaughan standing by the road. With slurred speech, Gaughan said he and his 11-year-old son were riding an ATV when they drove over a mound of dirt in a corn field. The ATV rolled over, landing on both of them, according to a police report.

Gaughan was bleeding from a cut in his head and he swayed while talking with officers, they said. He told police he drank “a couple of beers,” according to the report.

Police followed Gaughan to a nearby ambulance where the 42-year-old said his son was being treated. At the ambulance, Gaughan opened the door, got inside and refused to leave.

“This is my son,” he said, according to a report.

After officers pulled Gaughan out of the ambulance, he punched at police and tackled a deputy, the report said. Gaughan stopped when police threatened to use a Taser on him. Gaughan refused a Breathalyzer test.

He was taken to Lorain County Jail and appeared Monday in Elyria Municipal Court.
