WELLINGTON – A man who pulled over to change his tire Tuesday was hit by a passing car and thrown 25 feet off the road.
Daniel Calala, 57, of Wellington was taken by Lifeflight to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland with serious injuries. He remained in critical condition on Thursday.
About 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Calala pulled over on State Route 18 near Pitts Road to change a tire, according to Ohio State Patrol Trooper Corey Resendez.
Resendez said Calala was changing his front driver’s side tire when he was hit by a passing commercial vehicle traveling westbound. Calala was thrown 25 feet off the side of the road, and the vehicle continued westbound without stopping, according to Resendez.
Calala was able to make it back to his car, where a passing driver stopped to help him until paramedics arrived, Resendez said.
Ohio State Patrol is investigating the incident with help from the Wellington Police Department, which is looking for the driver of the commercial vehicle.
