LORAIN — Police arrested several men who were allegedly involved in a large fight in which a 47-year-old woman was assaulted during a family cookout for her birthday.
The woman, Lola Gonzalez, was found lying in the roadway at the intersection of East 30th Street and Toledo Avenue at 3:23 p.m. April 6, according to a police report.
Police said a large group of people ran when officers arrived.
Officers stopped a gold Pontiac Grand Am seen leaving the area, and the driver, 19-year-old Shikem Crutcher, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license after police discovered he had 12 open license suspensions.
A passenger, Devin Sweat, 18, was arrested on a warrant for a domestic violence charge.
Police said three juveniles in the vehicle were released.
Officers spoke with 20-year-old Jamie Pagan Jr., who said a group of people came to his mother’s house in an attempt to fight with him during a family cookout in the backyard.
He said the passengers in the gold Pontiac were involved in the fight, as well as Nicholas Latorre, who had been threatening him on Facebook.
Gonzalez, whom officers spoke with at Mercy Regional Medical Center, said she was celebrating her birthday when a large group of people came to the house and began yelling. She said her son went out to talk to them, but it soon turned into a physical confrontation.
Gonzalez told police that she tried to beat the people off of her son with a cane, and other family members soon joined in.
After an investigation, a number of people were charged for their part in the fight. According to a police report, Jamie Pagan Jr., Jonas Pagan and Noel Cruz, 23, were charged with aggravated riot on Friday.
Police went to a house on Grove Avenue to charge Nicholas Latorre, 18, with assault and aggravated riot, as well as Brandon Williams, 19, and Jorge Diaz Jr., 20, with aggravated riot but the men refused to let them in the house, according to Lorain police Sgt. Mike Failing.
