Lorain man arrested after woman found unresponsive

LORAIN — A 34-year-old man was arrested after police found his girlfriend unresponsive on the basement floor after he allegedly choked her until she had difficulty breathing.

The woman, 34-year-old Jennifer Varney, was flown to Metro Health Medical Center for severe injuries, but a hospital spokeswoman did not have a record of her.

Police said Varney’s face was swollen, purple in color, and there were visible strangulation marks around her neck when she was found. She was gargling in an attempt to breathe before she was taken to the hospital, police said.

Varney’s boyfriend and the father of her child, Timothy Loyer, was charged with domestic violence and felonious assault in connection with the incident.

Loyer’s sister, April Loyer, called 911 at 11:22 p.m. Saturday. Police said she reported that Timothy Loyer was trying to kill Varney.

Officers arrived to find Timothy Loyer on top of Varney, according to a police report. He told police that he was “only trying to help her because she fainted.”

April Loyer, who was crying, told police that her brother had been staying at her house after he was released from jail. She said Varney, one of Varney’s friends and their kids came over for a bonfire while she went upstairs to go to sleep.

About 11:15 p.m., she told police her son ran upstairs and said his uncle was trying to kill Varney, and she ran down to find Varney unconscious with Loyer on top of her, choking her.

She said she tried to pull Loyer off of Varney, but he bit her. She told police he said: “I don’t care. I hope the (expletive) dies.”

Varney’s friend told police that Timothy Loyer and Varney have an abusive relationship, so she was reluctant to go over to visit. She said the two decided to leave after learning that Loyer had been drinking, and Varney said she was taking the couple’s 2-year-old son elsewhere.

She said after Timothy Loyer and Varney disappeared into the basement, she discovered Loyer choking her. When confronted, she told police that Loyer chased her upstairs, and she hid her children in a bush.

She told police that Varney and Loyer’s 2-year-old son was present while Loyer assaulted Varney. Police said there were five children, ages 2 to 10, present during the incident.

Varney and April Loyer were issued temporary protection orders against Timothy Loyer, who was arrested at 12:37 a.m. Sunday.
