NORTH RIDGEVILLE — An 88-year-old driver critically injured in a high-speed March 17 crash has had his medical condition upgraded.
Nursing supervisor personnel at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland said Saturday night that Frank Cimino, of Avon, was listed in serious condition.
Cimino was driving a 2006 Buick Lucerne that slammed into the rear of a 2013 Mazda CX-5 at speeds of nearly 100 mph on state Route 83 near Dorchester Avenue, according to North Ridgeville police.
The force of the crash caused the Mazda to flip end-over-end after it went into a ditch. The driver of the vehicle, Patricia Habenicht, 66, was not seriously injured.
Neither was Cimino’s wife, Ruth, 75.
Police, who recorded Cimino’s speed at 97 mph just before the crash, said they believed the man had suffered some type of medical problem that led to the high-speed collision.
Police have said any charges against Cimino would depend on the man’s recovery, but that they would likely push for Cimino to be re-tested for his driver’s license.
