Lorain police arrest suspect in Fifth Third Bank robbery

LORAIN — A man who allegedly handed a threatening note to a bank teller and made off with a pocketful of money on Saturday has been arrested.

Jonathan Rhodes, 32, of Lorain was charged with robbery at about 10 a.m. at a relative’s house near the intersection of Elyria Avenue and 28th Street on Wednesday.

Police said Rhodes entered Fifth Third Bank 559 Broadway at about 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and handed a threatening note to the bank teller. He then stole money from the bank and left, crossing Broadway toward West 6th Street.

Police compared the surveillance footage from the robbery to footage of the suspect caught on surveillance cameras on Broadway, according to police.

He was seen entering an apartment complex on 610 Broadway. When police spoke to residents in the complex, they were able to identify Rhodes as the suspect, police said.

“(The surveillance cameras) really did make it easier,” Lorain Police Detective Jacob Morris said.

Rhodes was being held without bond at Lorain City Jail. His court date is 10 a.m. Thursday at Lorain Municipal Court.
