Two men face charges after Elyria police chase

ELYRIA — Early Monday, police said a driver trying to flee police began a car chase that ended when the vehicle crashed and he and a passenger were caught on the run.

Joshua Grant, 22, was charged with obstructing official business, resisting arrest, failure to comply, leaving the scene, driving under suspension, reasonable control, weaving, and driving through a red light about 1:15 a.m. near Lorain Boulevard and state Route 57.

Damonte Crim, 23, was charged with obstructing official business.

He had a felony warrant out for him from Cuyahoga County Court for drug trafficking.

About 1 a.m. Monday, an officer patrolling West River Road saw a white Kia weaving as it drove northbound, said Elyria Police Capt. Chris Costantino.

He said police tried to pull over the car around the intersection of West River Road and Filbert Street, but the driver ignored the officer and accelerated.

Officers followed the car to Lorain Boulevard, where the driver cut between two cars at a red light and drove 50 to 60 mph through the light before making a right turn onto state Route 57, Costantino said.

Because he was going over the speed limit, the turn posed a problem for the driver, and the car jumped the median on Route 57 and landed off the north side of the road, police said.

The officer following the Kia saw three men get out and run north.

The policeman ran after the driver, who later was identified as Grant, and caught up with him close to the scene of the crash, Costantino said.

According to police, Grant turned around to fight the officer and was immediately sprayed with pepper spray and tackled.

Another officer followed one of the two passengers — later identified as Crim — as he too ran north.

Crim was arrested around the 500 block of Bell Avenue, police said.

The second passenger wasn’t found, Costantino said.

Grant was taken to Lorain County Jail where he will be held on a $29,500 bond until his court date at 2 p.m. April 8 at Elyria Municipal Court.

Crim was taken to Cuyahoga County Jail for the warrant.
