ELYRIA – Police are searching for a man who ran off after jumping from a stolen car after being chased by officers Wednesday, police said.
A woman called police at 2 a.m. Monday and said her car was stolen from where it was parked outside of T & A Bar on 801 Foster Ave.
Two days later, around 10 a.m. Wednesday, an officer saw the car pulling out of a parking lot near Midway Mall.
Police tried to stop the car but the driver ignored officers and fled the area southbound on West River Road near State Route 57 with a passenger in the car, according to Elyria Police Capt. Chris Costantino.
The man drove through Elyria with police in pursuit until he got to Hayes Avenue near Foster Avenue where he jumped from the moving car, according to police.
“He had a disregard for anyone in the area,” Costantino said.
The passenger, who was still in the car, pulled to a stop and stayed at the scene, Costantino said.
The driver of the car immediately ran off, passing through back yards in the area, according to Costantino.
Police set up a perimeter around a few blocks of Hayes Avenue but couldn’t find the driver on Wednesday afternoon.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are questioning the passenger in the car but he has not been charged, according to police.
“The key thing … no one got hurt,” Costantino said.
