North Olmsted officer hurt in two-vehicle crash

LIVERPOOL TWP. — A North Olmsted police officer was listed in serious condition Saturday at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, after a motor-vehicle accident with a suspected impaired driver.

The officer, 43-year-old Jack Justice, of Liverpool Township, was traveling southbound on Station Road at 12:16 a.m. Saturday when another driver swerved into his lane, according to the Medina post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The other vehicle’s driver, 23-year-old Dalton Phillips, of Columbia Station, is likely to face charges for the crash, according to Sgt. Cliffton Dowell.

Troopers said Phillips was driving a 1992 Dodge Ram truck northbound on Station Road when he failed to negotiate a curve, driving off the east side of the roadway. Alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash, according to the patrol.

Justice’s car struck Phillips’ vehicle after Phillips overcorrected, troopers said.

The vehicle Phillips was driving traveled off the west side of the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned.

Phillips had serious injuries and was transported to Southwest General Hospital in Middleburg Heights.

Justice had critical injuries and was flown to MetroHealth. A hospital spokeswoman said he was in serious condition Saturday night.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office and Valley City Fire Department assisted with the crash, which is under investigation.

Dowdell said charges have not been filed.
