ELYRIA — It was 10 minutes before closing when a Subway employee said a masked man holding a gun entered the restaurant and quietly asked for money on Monday evening.
“I thought he was joking,” employee Vinnie Caruso said.
About 10 p.m., Caruso said he and another employee were getting ready to close the Subway restaurant at 38505 Chestnut Ridge Road. That’s when a white man entered the store wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a mask, Caruso said, and asked for money from the register.
It was only when Caruso saw a gun that the man held by his side that he realized the demand was not a joke.
After Caruso handed over money, the man ran out through a back door. Police searched the area with the help of police dogs but did not find him.
“I never thought it would happen at this particular store,” Caruso said, noting that the most surprising aspect of the robbery was how “mellow” the suspect seemed.
“He was the most pitiful excuse for a robber,” he said.
Police were still looking for the suspect on Tuesday. Anyone with information on the robbery or suspect should call police at 323-3302.
