Elyria doctor appeals sexual imposition conviction

ELYRIA — An Elyria doctor who saw his medical license permanently revoked after he was found guilty of groping patients, an employee and a job candidate is appealing both his criminal conviction and the loss of his medical license.

In court documents filed Monday, Dr. Somnath Roy’s attorney, Dave Doughton, said that trial attorney Kenneth Lieux should have put his client on the stand to defend himself against the accusations.

Doughton wants the Lorain County Common Pleas Court to throw out Roy’s convictions.

Roy was found guilty of four felony counts of gross sexual imposition and two misdemeanor counts of sexual imposition during his 2012 trial. He later was sentenced to three years of probation, fined $4,200 and ordered to undergo sexual offender treatment. He also is a registered sex offender.

Doughton also wrote that Lieux failed to call several witnesses who would have testified favorably on behalf of Roy. Some of those witnesses testified before the Ohio Medical Board, which stripped Roy of his license to practice medicine earlier this month.

Roy is appealing the loss of his license in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.
