Teens caught with bottle bombs

AMHERST — Police said they found cleaning materials, homemade bottle bombs and four stolen street signs when they responded to a complaint of suspicious activity in a backyard.

David Orzech, 18, of Amherst and three 17-year-old boys were charged with inducing panic, criminal tools and disorderly conduct about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at a house on the 100 block of East Avenue, where one of the 17-year-olds lived. Orzech and one of the boys were also charged with unlawful possession of street signs.

Police said they found the teenagers with two 20-ounce plastic bottles and tin foil in the backyard. Police also found four street signs, which had been taken from around the town, said Amherst police Lt. Dan Jasinski.

The bottles were full of a mixture of different kinds of house cleaner which, when put together and pressurized, can make a bomb, Jasinski said.

The teenagers cooperated with police and said they had followed directions they found on the Internet about how to make bombs, according to a press release.

Because the teenagers had not pressurized the bottles, police determined they were not dangerous.
