Member of Oberlin POWER board severely beaten

OBERLIN — A board member of Oberlin’s Providing Oberlin with Efficiency Responsibly is recovering at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland after a violent assault.

Police were called to B. McK’s Public House, 38 S. Main St., at 12:27 a.m. Dec. 20, according to Police Chief Tom Miller. He said the victim, Robert Smith, was found unconscious in the alley outside of the bar.

Smith was taken to Mercy Allen Hospital and later flown to MetroHealth, where he was listed in good condition by a hospital spokeswoman Monday.

Miller had few details on the assault, which is under investigation. He said it was unknown whether Smith had consumed alcohol, but he believed the assault was likely alcohol-fueled.

Miller said a report indicated that Smith did not know his attacker, and no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The alleged attack prompted Councilwoman-elect Sharon Pearson to reach out to city officials Saturday, requesting increased foot presence from police officers in the downtown area.

Pearson declined to comment when contacted Monday, but she confirmed Smith is a member of the POWER board, and he holds numerous positions at various organizations within the city.
