UPDATED: Man dead after being struck by train

ELYRIA — A man was killed in an apparent suicide after being struck by a Norfolk Southern train about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday.

The conductor said the man was lying on the tracks before being hit, according to police radio transmissions. The identity of the man is expected to be released today.

The eastbound train hit the man behind the Spitzer Management Inc. building, 150 E. Bridge St., near the Amtrak station, according to police Sgt. Kenneth Ross.

The train, which included two locomotives and 139 cars, stopped a few hundred yards east of where the man was struck. It remained stopped early this morning.

The train was headed from Chicago to Bethelhem, Pa., according to Dave Pidgeon, a Norfolk Southern spokesman. Pidgeon wrote in an email that he was unsure of the speed of the train, but the posted speed limit in the area is 50 mph.
