Arson being eyed as cause of car fire

ELYRIA — The Elyria Fire Department said arson is suspected in a car fire and garbage bin fire that were started near each other Monday morning.

Around 2:30 a.m. Monday, the Elyria Fire Department responded to the 300 block of Barres Lane where a fire had been started in a garbage bin. As they put out the fire, officers noticed a fire in a car parked across the street at 313 Barres Lane.

Firefighters extinguished the first fire in 20 minutes, then moved to the car fire, which they had out in 10 minutes. Elyria police arrived and noted in a report that a door to the back seat was ajar and the back seat, which was completely burned, suffered the most damage from the fire, according to the police report.

The owner of the car, Sherrie Glenn, 33, told police she parked about12:30 a.m. Monday on the street and went inside, though she said didn’t know if she locked the car.

Elyria Fire Marshal Carl Keith said it appears both fires were set.

“It absolutely is arson,” Keith said, adding that he is conducting an investigation into the fires. Glenn, he said, didn’t set them based on his interviews.
