Murder victim’s family sues woman’s killer, his parents

ELYRIA — The family of a woman who was beaten and choked to death last year has sued the man serving time on a murder charge for the slaying as well as the convicted killer’s parents.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Lorain County Common Pleas Court, said that Adam Grimes’ parents, Franklin and Donna Grimes, should have known their son was obsessed with the victim, 29-year-old Melanie Hruby, and wrongly considered her his girlfriend.

The lawsuit stated that the elder Grimeses should have known that Adam Grimes posed a threat to Hruby and taken steps to warn her and control their son’s behavior.

Grimes pleaded guilty earlier this year against the advice of his lawyer in the murder case and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

Police reported that Grimes killed Hruby at his parents’ Eaton Township home Dec. 18, 2012, during an argument. He told investigators that they had been doing drugs together earlier in the day.

Grimes told deputies that he hit Hruby, and when she hit him back, he struck her again, hard enough to knock her out. He then took her upstairs and choked her before fleeing in her van.

He later called a friend and said that he had “hurt or killed his girlfriend.” The friend called 911 and deputies arrested Grimes when he returned to the scene.

Grimes insisted when he pleaded out in the case that he wanted to take responsibility for his actions and that he hadn’t meant to kill Hruby.
