GRAFTON – State prison officials have identified the inmate killed Sunday at Grafton Correctional Institution as 65-year-old Gerald Pierce.
Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman Ricky Seyfang said Pierce was serving a sentence of 33 years to life on charges of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery out of Cuyahoga County. Pierce was admitted to prison in April 1990, according to prison records.
Pierce was killed Sunday in his cell during an altercation with his cell mate, who also is serving time on charges from Cuyahoga County. Seyfang declined to identify the other inmate or provide other information about him because the case is still under investigation.
The Ohio Highway Patrol has reported that the case is being handled as a homicide investigation, but no charges have been filed.
