UPDATE: Truck driver dies after being trapped under garbage bin

Officials are investigating a fatal incident Monday morning at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.

The Lorain Fire Department received a call at 9:14 a.m. that a man was trapped under a garbage bin in the receiving area at the south end of the hospital. Assistant Fire Chief Gary Burls said crews arrived on scene at 9:20 a.m. and found a man trapped by an industrial-sized roll-off bin. Firefighters used air bags to lift the bin and extricate the man, Burls said.

Once he was extricated, LifeCare and hospital workers worked on the man. Burls said he was not authorized to provide any medical information, but confirmed the Lorain County coroner was called to the scene.

Burls said the large bin was full of roofing materials from roofing work that had been done over the weekend, and that the victim was a truck driver preparing to remove the bin.

Officials have not released the man’s identity, but Travis Cotterman, owner of Cotterman and Sons Trucking in Monteville, said the man was a two-year employee of the company. Cotterman said the man’s family had been notified, but declined to comment further.

Jennifer Cakir, Mercy’s marketing and communications director, said the hospital is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.

Lorain Police Department, State Highway Patrol and Ohio Health and Safety Administration were investigating the incident, according to Burls.
