LORAIN — A city woman is in serious condition after being shot around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday. Her husband is accused of shooting her.
Vivien Garcia was in serious condition Thursday at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland while Walter Maldonado was in Lorain County Jail after being charged with felonious assault.
Garcia was shot on the front porch of a house at 1531 E. 31st St., according to a police report. Garcia and Maldonado, each of the 1200 block of East 36th Street, were visiting a man whom Maldanado told police had borrowed $6,500 from Garcia and refused to return it. Maldonado said the man had recently done construction work for him and it was supposed to be for free.
Maldonado denied shooting Garcia, accusing the man of doing it. However, police found four bullet holes in the man’s house and two in a house at 1527 E. 31st St.
The man said Garcia was standing on his porch when Maldonado, who had been in a car in front of the house, approached him. The man said he then heard shots and ducked back into his house.
After being shot, Garcia was driven from the house to the LifeCare Ambulance station at 109 W. 23rd St., where police detained and questioned Maldonado and two other men in the car. A gunshot-residue test was later performed on Maldonado and the two men, but the report didn’t say if the results were positive.
Maldonado, 44, was being held without bond. He is due in Lorain Municipal Court on Monday.
