Convicted felon's request for early release denied

ELYRIA — Convicted felon Andrew Lorenzana has lost his latest effort to win early release from the five-year prison sentence he is serving on drug, weapons and felonious assault charges.

Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Raymond Ewers denied Lorenzana’s request without explanation in a ruling Tuesday.

Lorenzana lost an earlier attempt to get out of prison in April after the case was transferred to Ewers following a bizarre hearing in Common Pleas Judge James Burge’s courtroom in which Lorenzana’s father, Raul Lorenzana, was sitting on the bench with Burge.

Raul Lorenzana was observing in court that day after the judge had made an offer to a college class the elder Lorenzana was taking. Burge said he didn’t realize he was Andrew Lorenzana’s father. Burge had planned to release the younger Lorenzana but dropped that plan after lawyers involved in the case pointed out who was sitting on the bench with him.
