Avon man indicted on aggravated murder charge in roommate's death

ELYRIA – Ryan Raider, accused of fatally shooting his roommate on Oct. 12, was indicted by a Lorain County grand jury on aggravated murder and felonious assault charges.

The 25-year-old Avon man remains at Lorain County Jail pending his next court appearance.

Raider is accused of killing his 29-year-old roommate, Brandon Smith, while he was drinking and playing with a gun. Police initially believed that the shooting was accidental, and Raider was charged with reckless homicide and having weapons while intoxicated.

According to Smith’s girlfriend, Emily Markel, she and Smith were lying in bed when Raider came into the room with a gun. The gun discharged shooting Smith in the head.

Raider denied that the shooting was intentional, telling police that the gun discharged when he tried to catch it after dropping it.
