UPDATE: Two juveniles arrested after Sheffield Lake carjacking

SHEFFIELD LAKE — A carjacking in Sheffield Lake led to a police chase, car crash and an almost four-hour search for two juvenile suspects Monday afternoon.

The incident began about 2 p.m. in the 4600 block of Lake Road when two boys stole a woman’s car outside of Dave’s Vacuum Cleaner Repair in Sheffield Lake, according to Sheffield Lake Police Chief Tony Campo. The owner saw the carjacking and attempted to grab onto her vehicle as the two juveniles drove away with it. When the boys refused to stop, the woman was dragged a short distance and suffered injuries as a result, Campo said.

Because the woman was injured, multiple police departments were called to the scene, Campo said. Only moments after the carjacking, Sheffield Police Chief Larry Bliss, who had heard a description of the car, saw the vehicle heading southbound on Harris Road minutes later and called police departments from Avon Lake, Sheffield, Sheffield Lake and Lorain to the scene.

“They were fleeing,” Bliss said. The boys were driving quickly down Harris Road before crashing the car near the intersection of Colorado Avenue and Root Road. After damaging the car, the two boys ran from the car into the woods north of Colorado Avenue, Bliss said, adding that police did not think the boys were armed.

When police responded to the scene, they formed a perimeter around the area and the railroad tracks.

The conducted a four-hour search through the woods with the help of K-9 units and park rangers. The first suspect was found and taken into custody around 3 p.m. The second was taken into custody around 6 p.m.

Police were unable to provide any additional information on Monday night.
