Woman indicted on murder charge in boyfriend's death

ELYRIA — Accused killer Anna Carter was indicted Thursday on charges of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

Carter, 30, of Lorain, is accused of stabbing her boyfriend, 40-year-old Jerome Phillips Jr., once in the chest Aug. 11. She called 911 to report that he was drunk and vomiting and, while she mentioned that he was bleeding under his arm, she didn’t tell the dispatcher how the injury occurred.

Phillips died from a stab wound to the heart, according to Lorain County Coroner Dr. Stephen Evans.

Carter was granted work privileges during a hearing on a motion Oct. 10. She was granted permission to travel to Westlake to apply for a job and possibly work at a nursing home there after defense attorney Mike Duff argued that Carter needed to work in order to fund her legal defense.

Carter has been free from jail since August after she posted 10 percent of the $100,000 bond set in Lorain Municipal Court. She was originally required to wear a GPS tracking device and was barred from leaving Lorain County.
