Cavs Notes

Shawn Marion reportedly agrees to play for Cavaliers

The Cavaliers’ amazing summer continued Sunday when veteran forward Shawn Marion committed to signing with Cleveland, according to numerous reports.

The Cavs had already added LeBron James, Mike Miller and James Jones and can officially complete their trade for Kevin Love as early as Saturday. Cleveland is also considered the favorite to sign 39-year-old shooting guard Ray Allen if he elects to play another season.

The 36-year-old Marion, who will be entering his 16th NBA season, will receive the veteran minimum of $1.4 million. He also talked with Indiana, which would have been able to pay him as much as $5.3 million, but chose the Cavs because they represent a better opportunity to add another championship ring to the one he won with Dallas in 2011.

Marion, who can play both forward spots, averaged 10.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 31.7 minutes while appearing in 76 games for the Mavericks last season.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pounder will likely have a reduced role in Cleveland, where he will play behind four-time league MVP James at small forward while also getting some minutes at power forward, but he’s the latest in a string of quality additions by general manager David Griffin.

Marion, a four-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA third-team pick, has averaged 15.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists for his career. He has close ties to Griffin from their days together with the Phoenix Suns.

Marion, who has also spent time with Miami and Toronto, is a well-rounded player on both ends of the court. He’s entering the twilight of his career, but he has 3-point range, is still an above-average finisher and remains an excellent defender and intelligent player.

Marion will also afford a lot of options to coach David Blatt, as the UNLV product and James can play together and be virtually interchangeable at the forward positions.

Blatt could also elect to go big and play James in the backcourt at times, with Marion at small forward and Love or Tristan Thompson at power forward.
