Cavs Notes

Cavaliers' coaching search a month old, still unresolved

Now more than a month old, the Cavaliers’ coaching search still appears to be going in several directions.

Los Angeles Clippers assistants Tyronn Lue, 37, and Alvin Gentry, 59, reportedly had second interviews Friday with general manager David Griffin. Owner Dan Gilbert was also set to participate.

That could mean Lue and Gentry are the front-runners, but the team is also set to conduct its first interview with David Blatt next week.

The 55-year-old Blatt, who grew up in Boston and played for the legendary Pete Carril at Princeton, officially announced his resignation as Maccabi Tel Aviv coach at a news conference Thursday.

Blatt did so to pursue his dream of coaching in the NBA.

“There’s several options, good options, and now that I have told Maccabi that I’m leaving, I will intensify my talks with NBA teams,” Blatt said.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the only other NBA team without a head coach, but Blatt’s name has been mentioned in connection with assistant jobs with Golden State, Minnesota and Atlanta. The Warriors, who recently hired Steve Kerr as coach, appear to be the leading candidate if Blatt doesn’t get the head coaching job in Cleveland.

The Cavs fired Mike Brown on May 12 after one season in his second stint with the team.

In addition to Lue and Gentry, the team is known to have interviewed Adrian Griffin, Vinny Del Negro, Lionel Hollins and Mark Price.

Recent reports also had the Cavs reaching out to former NBA coaches Mark Jackson and Nate McMillan, but it doesn’t appear interviews with either have been arranged.

In other news, 7-foot Kansas center Joel Embiid met with the Cavs this week and was put through a series of medical tests on his lower back, which forced him to miss games near the end of his freshman season. Embiid reportedly checked out fine.

Embiid, Kansas shooting guard Andrew Wiggins and Duke small forward Jabari Parker are the leading candidates to be taken by Cleveland with the No. 1 pick in the June 26 NBA Draft.

Wiggins and Parker are scheduled to work out for the Cavs next week.
