BEREA -- Rex Grossman’s time as the Browns’ third quarterback was short-lived.
He was signed after training camp started, didn’t play until Thursday’s preseason finale, made the 53-man roster Saturday and was cut Sunday.
Coach Mike Pettine left open the door for a return, calling the roster "very fluid."
The Browns added four players off waivers: receiver LaRon Byrd (from Dallas), offensive linemen Caylin Hauptmann (Seattle) and Ryan Seymour (San Francisco) and running back Glenn Winston (San Francisco).
To make room, the Browns terminated the contract of Grossman and waived receiver Charles Johnson and offensive linemen Karim Barton and Martin Wallace.
The Browns also signed linebackers Justin Staples and Keith Pough, offensive lineman James Brown, defensive lineman Jacobbi McDaniel and tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi to the 10-man practice squad.
The additions didn’t arrive in time for practice this afternoon.
Byrd (6-foot-4, 220 pounds) is in his third season out of Miami. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by Arizona in 2012 and has appeared in four games with one catch for 8 yards and two special teams tackles. He caught seven passes for 103 yards with a touchdown for Dallas during this preseason.
Winston (6-2, 220) is a rookie from Northwood University. He went undrafted and was signed by the 49ers. He led San Francisco with 113 rushing yards on 19 carries and a touchdown in the preseason. He began his career at Michigan State.
Hauptmann (6-3, 300) rejoins the Browns, who signed him as an undrafted rookie last year. He spent two weeks on the practice squad before Seattle signed him to its roster. He didn’t appear in a game for the Super Bowl champs.
Seymour (6-4, 305) was drafted in the seventh round by Seattle last year. He spent 14 weeks on the practice squad, before San Francisco signed him. He didn’t appear in a game.
McDaniel, Ogbuehi, Pough and Staples were in camp with the Browns. Brown is in his third season. He appeared in five games with the Bears.
Cornerbacks Joe Haden (foot), Buster Skrine (thumb surgery) and rookie Pierre Desir (knee) returned to practice. Defensive end Desmond Bryant (wrist surgery) remained on the stationary bike.
