Browns coach Rob Chudzinski: No QB decision yet, no plans to trade WRs Josh Gordon, Greg Little

BEREA – Browns coach Rob Chudzinski hasn’t decided if quarterback Brian Hoyer will start again Sunday at home against Cincinnati.

“I’m going to wait to make any determination on that until I have all the information,” Chudzinski said a day after the 31-27 victory over the Vikings, his first on the job.

Chudzinski said quarterback Brandon Weeden’s sprained right thumb is improving, but he hasn’t thrown since suffering the injury Sept. 15 in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Ravens. Weeden started the first two games.

Chudzinski was asked what information he’s waiting for to make the decision on who starts.

“We’ll sit down later today and talk about next week’s game, we’ll find out from a health status where guys are coming up in the next day or two and from a game-plan standpoint what we think we need to do and make those plans going forward,” he said.

Hoyer went from No. 3 on the depth chart to No. 1 last week and led the winning drive against the Vikings in the final minutes. Hoyer went 30-for-54 for 321 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions and a 68.5 rating.

“I thought it was a gutsy performance,” Chudzinski said. “He had some turnovers in the second half, a couple throws he’d like to have back, but that didn’t faze him. When we needed to rise up to the occasion, on the last drive he was able to do that and make the plays ultimately that helped us win the game.”

Chudzinski said his decision won’t be based on Weeden’s feelings, rather solely on what gives the team the best chance to win.

“That’s ultimately my responsibility, to make the decisions to give our team the best opportunity to win as I perceive that,” he said. “And that’s what we’ll do in this case as in all cases.”

Chudzinski said he hasn’t talked to receivers Josh Gordon and Greg Little about reports they’re on the trading block and doesn’t feel the need to.

“We have no plans on any of the trades,” Chudzinski said. “If there was an issue, I would talk to (them).

“The things that are out there that people say, the rumors, the things that people swirl around are just all noise. The reality is what’s in that team meeting room.”

Gordon made his season debut after a two-game suspension to start the year. He caught 10 passes for 146 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown.

Chudzinski was asked again about the possibility of trading Gordon.

“We have no plan on doing that,” he said.

Chudzinski will have injury updates Wednesday on outside linebacker Jabaal Sheard (knee), defensive end Billy Winn (quadriceps) and kicker Billy Cundiff (quadriceps).

Cundiff was unable to finish the game after feeling tightness on a kickoff. He said he didn’t want to risk further damage and was optimistic he’d be ready for Sunday.
