Browns rookie Barkevious Mingo ruled out for Sunday's opener; DL Ahtyba Rubin, CB Buster Skrine listed as questionable

BEREA – Browns rookie outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo has been ruled out of Sunday’s opener against Miami.

Mingo sustained a bruised lung Aug. 15 in a preseason game against the Lions and returned to practice this week. He did agility drills at practice throughout the week but was prohibited from having contact.

“He’s been evaluated and tested on a daily basis,” coach Rob Chudzinski said today after practice. “He’s not ready to go this week.”

Mingo was the No. 6 pick out of LSU and is expected to bolster the Browns’ pass rush.

“I really want to be out there,” he said of the opener. “But I’m looking on the bright side that I’m doing better.”

Mingo said he’s feeling great and hasn’t had a recurrence of spitting up blood or shortness or breath, two symptoms he experienced during the Lions game.

The Browns’ depth could be tested at all three levels of the defense vs. the Dolphins.

Defensive lineman Ahtyba Rubin (calf) and cornerback Buster Skrine (shoulder), both starters, were listed as questionable (50-50 chance of playing) on the official injury report. They were injured in practice Thursday and didn’t practice today.

Billy Winn would likely replace Rubin, with John Hughes and rookie Armonty Bryant also available on a deep defensive line.

Chris Owens would start for Skrine, with rookie Leon McFadden bumped up to the No. 3 cornerback spot. Joe Haden is the only other healthy cornerback on the active roster.

Chudzinski said safeties Johnson Bademosi, Tashaun Gipson and Josh Aubrey have the flexibility to play corner if needed.

Starting defensive end Desmond Bryant (back) was a full participant today after being limited Wednesday and Thursday in practice. He was listed as probable and said he expects to play.

** Linebacker D’Qwell Jackson (defense), left tackle Joe Thomas (offense) and linebacker Quentin Groves (special teams) were voted captains by the team.

Chudzinski will name an addition game captain every week. It’s receiver Davone Bess for Week 1. He spent the last five years with Miami.
