Browns: Brandon Weeden named starting QB

BEREA – Browns coach Rob Chudzinski ended whatever suspense was left, naming quarterback Brandon Weeden the starter for the regular season.

“Brandon has earned this job,” Chudzinski said this morning. “We are all behind him.”

Weeden has taken every repetition with the first-team offense through the offseason and training camp, so the announcement seemed like a formality. But last week Chudzinski said he wasn’t ready to name a starter and said the quarterback competition was “still close” with backup Jason Campbell.

Weeden responded against the Lions with his second straight strong preseason game and Chudzinski removed all doubt heading into the “dress rehearsal” third preseason game Saturday night in Indianapolis.

“I believe in guys earning things,” Chudzinski said. “He’s gone out and earned it. He’s responded very well.

“He's gained my complete trust. I felt like the timing was right.”

Weeden is 18-for-25 for 229 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, no sacks and a staggering 139.8 rating in two games and six drives. The first-team offense has scored 27 points.

He said he was excited when he got the news Monday from Chudzinski and glad he doesn’t have to answer any more questions about the competition.

“I feel like I’ve worked my tail off,” he said. “It’s rewarding. Now my main focus is on winning games.”

Weeden has been repeatedly challenged by the new regime of CEO Joe Banner, general manager Michael Lombardi and Chud. But Weeden said he feels he has their backing.

“This organization has a lot of excitement going,” he said. “I feel support from everyone, the players on up.”
